By: Jim Roddy, President & CEO at the RSPA
Roddy’s Recommended Reading is back and bigger than ever for 2025! For the past 19+ years, I’ve dedicated time most every week to leadership-based reading. I’ve kept track of the highest-quality books to compile “Roddy’s Recommended Reading,” a list I first shared publicly seven years ago and have updated annually since then. The list has expanded to 239 books thanks to recommendations from many of my SMB executive friends and RSPA members.
Over the past 12 months, I’ve read 16 additional books, each new title identified on the list below with an asterisk (*). Roddy’s Recommended Reading is categorized by subject and then listed in alphabetical order. To help make this over 200-title list more digestible, my 33 most highly recommended books are marked with a number sign (#). While every title on this list is at least very good, the highly recommended books are head of the class.
Of the new books I added this year, the most impactful was Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family by Bob Chapman and Raj Sisodia. I was so moved by this book that I made one of my 2024 goals to interview Chapman on the RSPA Trusted Advisor Podcast about his leadership philosophies. Mission accomplished: Ep. 125: Ethical Capitalism with CEO of the Year Bob Chapman.
Some of my favorite quotes from Everybody Matters include:
- We are destroying people and killing our culture because we send people home after treating them as objects and functions instead of caring about them as human beings.
- The greatest charity we can give back to society is to be truly human leaders who treat the people under our leadership with profound respect and care and not as objects for our success and wealth.
- We need to see ourselves as stewards of the lives we have been given an opportunity to lead and influence.
- Business can change the world if it fully embraces the responsibility for the lives entrusted to it.
- Any sphere of human activity that touches other humans must have a moral/ethical foundation; otherwise it inexorably drifts towards objectification and exploitation.
- If you feel that everyone is disposable, guess what? They think the same about you. It’s reciprocal.
- Organizations must cease to think of themselves as entities designed to use people in pursuit of their own self-interested goals.
- I changed my goal from “How can I better myself?” to “How can I help better those around me?”
- When I am done, I will look back and feel proud of all the lives we touched, not the machines we built.
In another year, I’ll update this list again so you can see what else I’ve discovered. Best of luck on your journey to become a dedicated leader and reader!
